Placido Domingo devient un habitué du Théâtre du Châtelet. Après y avoir chanté en 2009 Cyrano de Bergerac d’Alfano, le ténor star fait son retour dans Il Postino du compositeur mexicain Daniel Catan. Créé à l’Opéra de Los Angeles (dont Placido Domingo est le directeur général), cet opéra se base sur l’histoire du film Le Facteur de Michael Radford (avec Philippe Noiret) décrivant l’amitié qui se noue entre le célèbre poète chilien exilé Pablo Neruda et un jeune facteur. La musique de Daniel Catan, inconnue en France, oscille entre lyrisme néo-romantique et rythmes latinos. Plein de bons sentiments, cet opéra offre un rôle sur mesure à Placido Domingo, qui dialoguera pour l’occasion avec un jeune ténor (en alternance Antonio Coriano et Charles Castronovo). La mise en scène, visiblement très premier degré, est signée Ron Daniels et la direction musicale est assurée par Jean-Yves Ossonce à la tête de l’Orchestre symphonique de Navarre.
