C’est l’un des thèmes les plus forts de l’Ancien Testament : le meurtre d’Abel par son frère Caïn. Si le sujet a fasciné peintres, poètes et musiciens, l’oratorio écrit par Alessandro Scarlatti en 1707 n’est connu que de quelques spécialistes, notamment grâce à l’enregistrement réalisé par René Jacobs en 1998. Un oratorio aux dimensions opératiques, que le chef donne pour la première fois à l’Opéra de Paris. Romeo Castellucci, qui y a déjà monté une autre partition d’inspiration biblique et à la dimension métaphysique, Moses und Aron, a trouvé « extraordinaires la beauté, la douceur avec lesquelles Scarlatti traite l’homicide ». De cette jalousie entre les deux frères, « le personnage de Caïn touche le plus parce qu’il y a une dimension de culpabilité sacrée, magnifique, c’est vraiment le père de l’humanité. La religion est indépassable (…), c’est dans la fibre de notre société, je dirais encore plus aujourd’hui peut-être, dans des formes névrotiques. C’est une dimension totalement contemporaine. »
