Il pensait nous présenter sa version italienne du Tartuffe à Saint-Denis, au Théâtre Gérard-Philipe, qu’il a dirigé de 2014 à 2020. Reporté en raison de la crise sanitaire, le Tartufo de Jean Bellorini a finalement été joué pour la première fois en France à Villeurbanne, au Théâtre national populaire dont le metteur en scène a pris la direction en janvier 2020. Découvrir la pièce de Molière interprétée de si belle façon par une troupe de comédiennes et comédiens italiens (accompagnés du jeune Français Jules Garreau, qui incarne Valère), dans une traduction en vers libres de Carlo Repetti (dramaturge et ancien directeur du Teatro Stabile di Genova, disparu en décembre 2020), est une expérience enthousiasmante. Cette proposition partagée entre clair et obscur, quotidienneté et poétique, drôlerie et sensibilité, légèreté et densité émotionnelle renouvelle entièrement notre vision du Tartuffe. Véritable modèle d’équilibre, la mise en scène de Jean Bellorini échappe au formalisme, au conceptuel, à la cérébralité pour investir les champs du concret, de la corporalité, de la profondeur des sentiments humains. Les personnages qui se révèlent à nous sont nos frères et nos sœurs. Ils nous parlent, nous troublent, nous font rire. Leurs bouleversements nous concernent intimement. Leurs déboires sont les nôtres.
Un Tartuffe qui vit et qui vibre
D’autres auraient forcé le trait de la comédie à l’italienne, cédant aux sirènes du folklore, de la parodie, des débordements et des stéréotypes. Jean Bellorini, lui, fidèle à l’exigence de son théâtre populaire, a dosé ses effets avec précision. Son travail est tout à la fois d’une grande délicatesse et d’une grande intensité. Il Tartufo nous ouvre l’espace d’une immense cuisine, espace décati qui semble sortir d’une modernité de la fin des années 1960 (les lumières et la scénographie sont du metteur en scène, les costumes de Macha Makeïeff). Ici, on se met aux fourneaux, on dresse la table, on mange des spaghettis, on ouvre son cœur, on se laisse séduire, on entre, on sort, on revient, on s’oppose, on se réconforte, on se conseille, on se ment, on débat avec l’autre, on se débat avec soi-même… Tout cela, à la faveur de l’inspiration imposante de Federico Vanni, Teresa Saponangelo, Betti Pedrazzi, Ruggero Dondi, Daria D’Antonio, Angela De Matteo, Francesca De Nicolais, Luca Iervolino et Gigio Alberti, Giampiero Schiano et Jules Garreau. Le directeur du Théâtre national populaire a composé une troupe de grands interprètes. De plain-pied avec ce qu’ils vivent, avec ce qu’ils disent, ils laissent percer, au-delà des rires, une forme saisissante de mélancolie. Ils chantent aussi de la variété italienne. Puisant dans ce que nos deux pays ont de meilleur, ils donnent corps à un Molière surprenant. Un Molière qui a des airs de Goldoni.
