Au chant VIII de L’Odyssée, tandis que l’aède Démodocos rappelle la geste héroïque qui ensanglanta la plaine d’Ilion, Ulysse voile régulièrement sa tête pour pleurer, alternant écoute et libations, piété et pitié. Pauline Bayle et les siens réussissent à produire, de manière hallucinante, le même mélange d’admiration et d’horreur chez le spectateur. On est obnubilé par les combats, fasciné par la kyrielle des noms des héros, hilare face aux démêlés érotiques et politiques des Olympiens, qui manipulent l’avidité sanglante des Troyens et des Grecs. On voit rarement autant d’irrévérence drolatique alliée à un sens aussi aigu du tragique : l’adaptation que signe Pauline Bayle atteste d’une connaissance parfaite du texte et de ses enjeux anthropologiques et dramaturgiques. D’un accessoire, d’un geste, d’un regard, les cinq interprètes changent de personnage avec une prestesse stupéfiante. Quelques chaises, des paillettes, du sang et de la poussière font les armes, les murs de Troie et la colère du fleuve Scamandre. L’ensemble fait naître des images magnifiques et révèle un sens aigu du rythme et de l’enchaînement. À ne manquer sous aucun prétexte !
