Qui était Heinrich Schliemann ? Un milliardaire allemand obsédé par L’Iliade au point d’entreprendre de découvrir les ruines de Troie, ce à quoi il parvint… au prix de moyens discutables. Du destin de cet homme mystérieux, aux contours et passé flous, Betsy Jolas puisa l’inspiration d’un opéra, « monstre de 4 heures », créé à l’Opéra de Lyon en 1995, sur un livret de Bruno Bayen, d’après sa pièce Schliemann, épisodes ignorés. Le texte avait déjà été monté en 1982 à Chaillot, avec Antoine Vitez dans le rôle de l’archéologue. Pour le Conservatoire de Paris, la compositrice élabore une toute nouvelle version, plus ramassée, de son opéra, bouleversant l’ordre de l’ouvrage initial et empruntant son nouveau titre à l’une des parties de la pièce de Bayen. L’occasion de découvrir le travail des élèves du département des disciplines vocales et de l’Orchestre du Conservatoire de Paris, sous la direction de David Reiland, et dans la mise en scène d’Antoine Gindt. Le metteur en scène choisit de raconter cette histoire où se réinventent les personnages grecs de l’épopée dans une atmosphère onirique, et joue aussi avec la dimension de « supercherie » de l’autobiographie de Heinrich Schliemann, « où il ne raconte que ce qu’il a envie de faire savoir de lui, et qui est souvent une affabulation »…
