Créé en 1855 sous la baguette de Berlioz avec le compositeur au piano, le Concerto pour piano n°1 de Liszt conjugue une virtuosité exigeante à une originalité formelle dont les enjeux esthétiques n’échapperont pas à Jean-Paul Gasparian qui, à 27 ans, nourrit, à côté du clavier, une passion pour la philosophie, et compte parmi les figures incontournables de la nouvelle génération. L’invention et le chatoiement sont également à l’honneur dans les cinq Etudes-tableaux de Rachmaninov – sur les dix-sept du cycle – que Respighi a arrangées pour l’orchestre, en 1931, sur l’invitation de Serge Koussevitzky, dans une sorte de suite symphonique explicitant les motifs poétiques à la source de l’original pianistique. Le programme dirigé par Ilyan Rivas se referme sur la Symphonie n°1 de Chostakovitch, coup de maître d’un jeune compositeur de 19 ans qui s’inscrit dans la vitalité moderniste des années vingt.
