Comme ses compatriotes Anne Teresa de Keersmaeker ou Jan Fabre, Wim Vandekeybus revisite ces dernières années son répertoire. Après avoir remonté sa pièce inaugurale et premier succès, What the body does not remember, il reprend In Spite of Wishing and Wanting, une œuvre clé dans son parcours. En effet, le chorégraphe flamand y explore pour la première fois un travail cinématographique et y abandonne les rapports hommes femmes pour mettre en scène une horde entièrement masculine. Mettant à nu les inconscients, il questionne, avec l’urgence et les prises de risques physiques qui caractérisent son style, les désirs et angoisses archaïques des douze protagonistes. Dans ce monde où chacun cherche sa place et son identité dans ses fantasmes et rêves d’enfants, l’innocence la plus pure côtoie la violence la plus sauvage, les pulsions sont à nu, rage et besoin viscéral de tendresse compris. Les séquences dansées fulgurantes, fondues dans des séries de monologues, sont mises en musique par David Byrne, ex-leader des Talking Heads.
