« Cirque de caractère ». C’est bardée de ce slogan en guise de manifeste qu’une tribu cosmopolite d’artistes indisciplinés fonda Archaos en 1986. Menée par Pierrot Bidon et Guy Cararara, la compagnie invente alors un cirque en prise avec l’époque, ébouriffe toutes les conventions et croise en liberté insolence rock, poésie funambule, esthétique de la déglingue et dérision pétaradante. Le succès fulgurant, en France comme à l’étranger, hisse d’emblée cette aventure au rang de légende. Tisonnant questions sociétales et politiques avec un sens spectaculaire détonnant, Archaos n’hésite pas à s’attaquer au choc des cultures dans Métal clown (1991) ou à l’emprise des nouvelles technologies dans Game over (1995). En 1999, trois ans après la naissance de « Dolly », premier mammifère cloné sur des cellules adultes, In Vitro imagine les dérives possibles des techniques du vivant. « Ce qui m’avait fasciné, c’était la réaction des journalistes, des philosophes et des théologiens sur le phénomène de société que constituent ces découvertes scientifiques, sur le fait, entre autres, que la société allait peut-être pouvoir se passer du sexe pour la reproduction. » raconte Guy Carrara (1).
Parodie de la condition de l’artiste
Dix ans après, Guy Carrrara et Raquel Rache de Andrade ont créé une nouvelle version pour neuf interprètes sortant de l’Ecole nationale de cirque de Rio de Janeiro, du Cnac en France, de l’Esac en Belgique et de The Circus Space en Grande-Bretagne. D’une esthétique plus épurée, In Vitro 09 s’appuie sur une structure scénique inédite : un kiosque tournant utilisé comme un agrès de cirque, où s’inscrivent le mât chinois, la danse, le jonglage, l’acrobatie et la corde molle. On y retrouve Ferdelans, savant dévoyé, qui, dans son laboratoire clandestin, manipule la génétique pour créer des êtres hybrides, mi-hommes mi-animaux, plus compétitifs. De ce récit d’anticipation, où le burlesque le dispute à l’effroi, affleure une parodie métaphorique sur la condition d’artiste comme « bête de cirque ». « L’artiste de cirque n’est pas un gladiateur que l’on sacrifie et remplace au jour le jour par une créature plus compétitive sortie du "laboratoire" », clame Guy Carrara. Une déclaration qui vaut nouveau manifeste.
