Ecrite en 1938, Inconnu à cette adresse traverse l’histoire de la montée du nazisme par le biais d’une tragédie intime douloureuse : la discorde puis la rupture irrémédiable entre deux marchands d’art liés depuis l’enfance par une profonde amitié. Ainsi, sur une période allant de 1932 à 1934, Kressmann Taylor nous ouvre la correspondance échangée par Max (un Juif américain installé en Californie) et Martin (son ancien associé parti vivre à Munich), correspondance qui dévoile l’adhésion de ce dernier à l’idéologie nationale-socialiste. Mise en scène par Xavier Béja — qui interprète également le personnage de Max — cette nouvelle version théâtrale d’Inconnu à cette adresse se veut « nette » et « dépouillée ». Ainsi, travaillant à mettre ce texte en lumière avec « force et simplicité », Xavier Béja a voulu construire un face-à-face épuré et musical, un face-à-face au plus proche de la « progression bouleversante »de ce drame.
