C’est sans doute l’une des œuvres les plus symboliques de l’histoire musicale du xxe siècle. Composé en 1962 pour la consécration de la cathédrale de Coventry, reconstruite après sa destruction par les bombes allemandes en 1940, le War Requiem est une œuvre d’une grande force humaniste, portée par trois solistes et deux chœurs qui mêlent aux mots de la messe des morts ceux du poète Wilfred Owen, mort sur le front de la Première Guerre mondiale. L’Orchestre de Paris avait donné l’œuvre par deux fois sous la direction de Mstislav Rostropovitch, grand ami du compositeur. Il accueille aujourd’hui l’un des meilleurs spécialistes de la musique d’orchestre du xxe siècle, Ingo Metzmacher, épaulé par un trio vocal de haute tenue : Indra Thomas, Paul Groves et Matthias Goerne.
