Lorsque Nicolas Fraiseau se retrouve seul en piste avec son mât chinois, il se passe quelque chose de spécial. Dans Instable, le jeune circassien donne non seulement au mât chinois une autonomie qui lui est encore assez rarement offerte dans le cirque actuel, mais il le fait avec l’exigence et la folie du rêve qui a motivé son projet : celui d’« accrocher un mât sur une ligne presque invisible qui était un fil de fer ». Sur sa tige métallique, Nicolas Fraiseau côtoie l’absurde avec une grâce qu’il laisse opérer sans chercher à la souligner. Suspendu entre comique et tragique, l’ascension n’est pour lui pas très différente de la dégringolade. C’en est une variante qui sert la même inquiétude et la même fragilité. La même attirance vers un point limite : celui où le cirque s’annule face à la méditation et à la pensée.
