Dans son célèbre essai The Uses of Enchantement paru en 1976, le pédagogue américain Bruno Bettelheim analyse les contes de fées (Blanche Neige, La Belle et la Bête, Cendrillon, Jack et le haricot magique…) à la lumière de la psychanalyse. Le compositeur Stephen Sondheim s’est inspiré de ces écrits pour élaborer sa pétillante comédie musicale Into the Woods. Tous les contes ont pour cadre la forêt et les histoires des personnages célèbres s’entremêlent. Le livret, réalisé par James Lapine, met en scène un boulanger et sa femme, vivant au Moyen Âge. Au fil de leur parcours, ils rencontrent le Petit Chaperon Rouge, Raiponce, une méchante sorcière… Les chansons qui accompagnent ce récit ne manquent pas d’humour et de dérision. Pour cette nouvelle production, la québécoise Kimy McLaren incarne Cendrillon et le baryton-basse britannique Nicholas Garrett le boulanger. La mise en scène a été confiée à Lee Blakeley. Quant à l’Orchestre de chambre de Paris, décidément polyvalent, il est placé sous la direction de David Charles Abell, expert en musicals.
