Les Trente Glorieuses avaient besoin de main-d’œuvre. Dans les usines, sur les chantiers, sur les routes, les travailleurs immigrés ont œuvré à la reconstruction d’une France qui les voulait discrets et durs à la tâche, parqués dans les foyers pour célibataires ou dans les bidonvilles de la région parisienne, seuls souvent, silencieux et soumis plus souvent encore. Nombreux sont ceux qui sont restés : « La France est devenue leur pays, ils y ont apporté leurs rêves, mais ils sont devenus des fantômes. », dit Nasser Djemaï, qui a décidé de recueillir et de faire entendre leurs paroles, afin de les arracher à l’oubli et de leur rendre la dignité et la fierté que la relégation sociale et l’ingratitude nationale leur dénient. Par un travail vidéo, audio et de photographie, Nasser Djemaï a gagné la confiance des Chibanis et enregistré leurs expériences, leurs histoires et leurs souvenirs. A partir de ce matériau mémoriel, il a inventé une trame narrative et des personnages, et finalisé l’écriture avec les comédiens, par un aller-retour entre la table et le plateau. Le résultat fait « exploser des moments de vérité, avec toute la violence, la cruauté et la drôlerie qui vont avec ».
