« Iphigénie, une femme mythique et moderne qui s’affirme l’égale de l’homme et gagne le combat contre la barbarie. » : ainsi résume Simone Rist, qui considère le texte de Goethe comme la plus contemporaine des œuvres. La metteur en scène a choisi de mettre la musique de Xenakis et le théâtre pauvre de Grotowski au service de cette histoire magnifique. « Tout en s’inspirant du texte d’Euripide, Goethe s’éloigne de la mythologie pour peindre un caractère de femme. La pièce parle de l’égalité des femmes et des hommes, de la maltraitance des étrangers, des souffrances de l’exil et de la nostalgie du pays natal, des lois cruelles imposées par les dirigeants et par la religion. Elle parle d’espoir et illustre le triomphe de l’humanité sur la barbarie. » Oreste et Pylade débarquent en Tauride pour arracher la vierge devenue prêtresse au farouche Thoas. Pour les sauver d’une mort certaine, Iphigénie se réclame des principes que tous ont trahi en l’immolant : l’amour, la fidélité à la parole donnée et le souci bienveillant de l’autre. La troupe composée par Simone Rist offre sa fougue et sa jeunesse au bénéfice de cet éloge du courage et de la vertu.
