Dans l’Odyssée, Homère raconte le retour d’Ulysse sur son île d’Ithaque, après la guerre de Troie et une errance de dix ans qui le tinrent éloigné du pouvoir, de son épouse Pénélope, et de son fils Télémaque. Il raconte l’entreprise de reconquête à laquelle le plus célèbre héros de la mythologie doit se livrer, reconquête tant de sa position familiale que de sa position politique. S’emparant des derniers chants de l’épopée grecque, le dramaturge allemand Botho Strauss (né en 1944) projette toutes ces aventures dans notre société contemporaine. « Avec Botho Strauss », explique Jean-Louis Martinelli, « nous glissons du monde d’Homère à aujourd’hui. Il est donc fondamental de se ressouvenir qu’avec l’Odyssée nous sommes en présence du premier grand récit d’avant “la cité”. Les règles de ce monde diffèrent certes de celles du monde contemporain, mais il demeure particulièrement éclairant sur les comportements de l’homme d’aujourd’hui. Sans nous chercher à travers ce texte, il nous questionne à chaque ligne. »
Comportements archaïques
A la tête d’une troupe de quinze comédiens (parmi lesquels Charles Berling dans le rôle d’Ulysse, Ronit Elkabetz dans le rôle de Pénélope, Clément Clavel dans le rôle de Télémaque, Jean-Marie Winling dans les rôles du porcher Eumée et de Laërte…), le directeur du Théâtre des Amandiers souhaite ainsi éclairer les comportements archaïques que l’homme met en œuvre dans le seul but d’assurer sa survie ou sa réussite. Combien d’individus obnubilés pas la victoire sont-il prêts à toutes les ruses, à travestir la réalité, à user de tous les ressorts du langage afin d’arriver à leurs fins ? La quête du juste et du vrai n’a-t-elle pas fui le cœur de nos débats ? Voici quelques-unes des interrogations que Jean-Louis Martinelli a placées au centre de sa mise en scène d’Ithaque. Des interrogations qui veulent nous rappeler « que le vivre ensemble suppose la mise en place de règles, d’institutions, bref d’un Etat de droit ».
