Philippe Adrien définit Ivanov comme « le type même du sujet masculin des temps modernes ». Cet exalté épuisé, « une nature émotive et ardente » selon les mots de Tchekhov, s’est lassé d’aimer, d’agir, de faire le bien et de combattre le mal et s’ennuie en se sentant coupable de son aboulie neurasthénique. Seul, sans véritable soutien, entouré par l’hiver et la maladie, Ivanov erre sans savoir quoi faire de lui-même. Antihéros semblable au plus commun des mortels, Ivanov s’enlise dans la médiocrité, incapable d’échapper au dégoût de soi et inapte au sursaut positif, comme suspendu au-delà du bien et du mal. Personnage éminemment complexe, Ivanov relève d’une justice « qui saurait apprécier l’ambiguïté et la complexité des êtres humains » dit Philippe Adrien. Une justice qui vaudrait pour Ivanov « mais aussi pour notre culture dans son ensemble » ajoute le metteur en scène…
