« Comédies naturalistes » sur la famille, les conflits des générations, la liberté individuelle, le déterminisme et le conditionnement, Jacques ou la soumission et L’Avenir est dans les œufs font partie de ce qu’Eugène Ionesco appelait un « théâtre de boulevard se décomposant et devenant fou ». Fous, les parents de Roberte, ou ceux de Jacques, géniteurs aimant leur enfant au point de vouloir le contraindre à aimer les pommes de terre au lard, le forcer à se marier, à se reproduire le plus vite et le plus abondamment possible ? Sinon fous, pour le moins extravagants, de cette extravagance qu’affectionnait l’auteur d’origine roumaine : une extravagance mêlant « le comique et l’atroce, la pesanteur et le léger, le banal et l’extraordinaire, le rêve et le réel ». « Par la forme comique, éclaire Laurent Pelly, Ionesco figure ici l’expression d’une angoisse, il utilise la distorsion du langage comme un instrument musical et burlesque, comme si on voyait avec les oreilles ou si on entendait avec les yeux d’un enfant... »
