« L’artiste se bat pour une belle âme, c’est-à-dire celle de l’ange, lumineuse, légère, innocente. Mais il est aussi le fou dans la société. » remarque Jan Fabre. Plasticien, performeur, écrivain, chorégraphe et metteur en scène, cet esthète frondeur – volontiers iconoclaste – pratique l’art comme un combat pour la beauté. Dans sa trilogie théâtrale, il questionne le rôle de l’artiste dans la société, dérisoire et sublime. Après L’Empereur de la perte (1994), plaidoyer pour l’imperfection et la force souveraine du refus, Le Roi du plagiat (2004), raillerie de l’originalité vaniteuse, Le serviteur de la beauté (2010) vacille du rêve platonicien à la plantureuse réalité… Métaphore de l’humain toujours tiraillé entre l’aspiration à la transcendance et la tentation du profane.
