Depuis le début des années 70, il est l’une des figures de proue d’ECM, et l’un de ceux qui ont le plus efficacement contribué à l’image du son caractéristique du label allemand. En particulier suite à sa rencontre historique avec Keith Jarrett en 1974 et leur premier album magistral en commun : Belonging, premier opus du « quartet Européen » de Keith Jarrett composé aussi du bassiste Palle Danielsson et du batteur Jon Cristensen. Depuis, Jan Garbarek n’a eu de cesse d’ouvrir des voix nouvelles dans son œuvre en leader, du solo aux rencontres avec des musiciens du monde – les indiens Chaurasia, L. Shankar ou Zakir Hussain – ou classiques, comme le compositeur Giya Kancheli, l’altiste Kim Kashkashian ou The Hilliard Ensemble avec lequel il signe le best-seller Officium, album vendu à un million d’exemplaires. Invité exceptionnel de la Seine musicale, il retrouve le légendaire percussionniste indien Trilok Gurtu au sein de son quartette actuel, en compagnie du pianiste allemand Rainer Brüninghaus, compagnon de route du saxophoniste depuis la fin des années 1980, et du bassiste brésilien Yuri Daniel.
