« Guerre et térébenthine est à Stefan ce que La Chambre d’Isabella est à moi », dit Jan Lauwers en parlant de deux chefs-d’œuvre. Le sien a été créé en 2004 sur la base de sa propre histoire familiale, dont le succès n’a jamais été démenti depuis. La MC 93 n’a pas hésité à le reprendre. Elle accueille aussi son adaptation du best-seller de son ami Stefan Hertmans, qui traverse la Première Guerre mondiale. Ce qui pouvait paraître comme un pari risqué s’appuie tant et si bien sur la présence de son incroyable muse et performeuse Viviane de Muynck que la pièce devient une œuvre totale. Elle se glisse dans la peau du narrateur, mais endosse aussi les rôles des personnage féminins pour dérouler le récit. Autour d’elle, les tableaux s’enchaînent dans des chorégraphies qui mêlent la violence à la beauté.
