Que représente Monk dans votre univers ?
Jason Moran : Monk, c’est « le Big Bang ». Il y a peut-être eu un avant, mais il y a eu plus sûrement un après. Sa découverte à l’adolescence a été comme une renaissance. Je jouais du piano depuis l’âge de six ans, mais entendre Monk à quatorze ans a changé mon état d’esprit. Tout à coup, il était clair que je devrais jouer du piano et prendre tout cela très au sérieux. Dès lors tout m’était musicalement disponible. Cette ouverture, c’est à Monk que je la dois.
Pourquoi avoir choisi le concert du Town Hall ? En quoi est-il particulier ou emblématique de l’esthétique de Monk ?
J . M. : En fait, le concert du Town Hall a été choisi pour moi par le Festival de Jazz de San Francisco. Je pense qu’il y a vraiment là toute l’esthétique de Monk. Le meilleur exemple se trouve dans « Little Rootie Tootie » : pendant le concert, l’orchestre joue en réalité le solo de piano de Monk d’un enregistrement précédent. L’auto-référence y est extrêmement conceptuelle et progressive. Ce concert fut aussi la première fois que la musique de Monk était interprétée par un grand orchestre. On peut d’ailleurs voir là un parallèle avec moi-même, puisque je n’ai jamais travaillé avec un grand orchestre, hormis pour ce projet.
Ce projet met également en jeu des images. Comment vont-elles s’articuler dans le dispositif musical ?
J . M. : Le vidéaste, David Dempewolf, a réalisé le travail d’assemblage et de montage. Il a utilisé diverses sources, comme tout le matériel filmique des répétitions préparatoires du concert de Town Hall, des images de Monk en scène, les photos de Monk prises par Eugene Smith, mais aussi des plans de New York, une vidéo de mon appartement, une autre du lieu où vivaient les grands-parents de Monk, alors qu’ils étaient esclaves… Derrière l’orchestre, il y aura donc un grand écran pour projeter cette création durant la performance. Et à ce dispositif, s’ajouteront en surimpression beaucoup de bandes sonores pré-enregistrées : parfois ma voix, parfois celle de Monk, mais aussi celle d’inconnus… Tout cela donne au final une œuvre originale à multiples dimensions.
