D’emblée, dans son bref édito de présentation, Gérard Cayez pointe du doigt le hiatus, interrogeant la nature et le sens du jazz actuel : « Serait-ce un style, un courant, une écriture, une mode, une étiquette, un produit ou l’expression d’un état d’esprit conscient de ses origines et donc empreint de liberté ? ». D’où sa programmation, loin des autoroutes festivalières. Ainsi sont convoqués aussi bien 44 Duos de Bela Bartók au prisme du chant basque que l’afro-beat nigérian avec le maître des tambours Tony Allen, le trio déjanté Cannibales et Vahinés trio noisy jazz mais aussi le superbe dialogue entre la voix de Phil Minton et le saxophone de Daunik Lazro… Il y aura aussi United Colors Of Sodom, soit 14 musiciens sous la direction du bassiste Jean-Philippe Morel, pour de grandes embardées qui traversent tout le spectre sonore, et le quartet de la contrebassiste Hélène Labarrière, une autre version du jazz made in France. Sans oublier la présence en solitaire de Joe McPhee, poly-saxophoniste pas franchement poli par les injonctions du marché.
