Invités de la Maison de la Musique de Nanterre, de jeunes musiciens issus du département jazz du CNSM que dirige le contrebassiste Riccardo del Fra offrent un écrin musical à une sélection de petits films réalisés par Charlie Chaplin en 1914. A l’écran, les débuts d’un génie du 7ème art et sur scène l’art de l’improvisation de ces peut-être futurs grands du jazz français. Trois jours plus tard, dans le cadre du festival Extension de La Muse en circuit (Centre national de création musicale), le compositeur contemporain Frédéric Verrières a imaginé un projet de création musicale convoquant deux musiciens de jazz bien repérés (Eric Echampard et Benjamin Moussay), un comédien (Philippe Leygnac) et de vieux dessins animés des années 30-40 de la série Tom and Jerry. « C’est la découverte d’une gestuelle commune aux personnages de dessins animés et aux musiciens qui m’a inspiré de les faire jouer ensemble. Les musiciens sur scène, à la façon d’un sous-titrage musical, sont les exactes doublures de nos héros de cartoons. Semblables aux musiciens, ils sont extrêmement agiles, et leur agitation permanente est précise comme le geste d’un virtuose. La folle course entre dessins et musique peut commencer… » explique Frédéric Verrières.
