On célèbre ce mois-ci le cinquantenaire de la disparition de Sidney Bechet (14 mai 1897 – 14 mai 1959), immense saxophoniste et clarinettiste de jazz et authentique génie (avec seulement une poignée d’autres musiciens) de l’Histoire de cette musique. Un anniversaire qui passe étrangement et scandaleusement inaperçu, d’autant que les liens de Bechet avec notre pays furent très forts… Cette indifférence générale rend plus précieux encore l’hommage que lui rend la ville de Grigny (dans l’Essonne) où vécut le grand musicien dans les années 50. Parmi les temps forts, notons le concert du compositeur, batteur et pianiste Daniel Bechet (fils de Sidney) en sextet (le 13 à 20h30), le quintette réuni par Daniel Pines au piano et Jean-Philippe Bordier à la guitare (le 14) pour une relecture audacieuse des standards du maître, ou encore, dans un langage plus contemporain, les « jazz-apéritifs » à domicile des 11 et 12 mai en compagnie du duo que composent Chris Hayward (flûte) et Allie Delfau (piano). Deux expositions (“Les années Grigny de Bechet” et “L’Odyssée du Jazz”), une série de concerts gratuits par les Ateliers Jazz du Conservatoire et de concerts-éducatifs et une conférence de Nicolas Beniès « Sidney Bechet, génie oublié » (le 9 mai à 15h30) complètent cette manifestation exemplaire et nécessaire.
