« Jazz in Japan 2008 » se décline en trois soirées reflétant la vitalité et la diversité d’un jazz nippon contemporain souvent tenté par les expériences musicales déjantées et hybrides. La programmation s’ouvre avec le pianiste et compositeur Masaru Imada, vétéran de la scène jazz japonaise. Il revient aujourd’hui, après 50 ans de carrière, plus de quarante albums et des expériences dans les domaines du free et de la fusion, à un swing élégant, vif et limpide servi par un quartet composé de Mamoru Inagaki (contrebasse), Shinji Mori (batterie) et Chieko Tsutsumi (saxophones). Le lendemain, le 26, une découverte nous attend avec une formation au nom surprenant, le « Group Salle Gaveau from Japan », délivrant un tango-fusion brassant de manière explosive l’héritage du new tango de Piazzolla, des fulgurances free et des solos de guitare hallucinés lorgnant du côté du rock progressif. Avec Natsuki Kido (guitare), Naoki Kita (violon), Yoshiaki Satô (accordéon), Keisuke Torigoe (contrebasse) et Kyôko Kuroda (piano). Enfin, le jazz « made in Japan » se révélera, le 27, sous un jour encore plus insaisissable avec le trio du guitariste Yoshihide Otomo. Prodigieux inventeur de sons, cet « enfant du free » est l’un des improvisateurs de référence de l’avant-garde japonaise. Virtuose des machines et des platines, Otomo signe ici un retour à une formule plus resserrée et dépouillée, en trio avec Hiroaki Mizutani (contrebasse) et Yasuhiro Yoshigaki (batterie).
