Personnage magnifique du jazz européen, familier et légendaire à la fois, disciple de Bud Powell, compagnon de route ou de jeu des plus grands musiciens américains des années 60 (Stan Getz, Lester Young Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillespie, etc), René Urtreger se réapproprie son destin musical à partir du milieu des années 80, retrouvant une soif de jouer et de créer magnifique, après des années d’égarements personnels. « Depuis, je lutte contre la routine, contre l’habitude… Je connais la vie et je veux continuer de me surprendre et surprendre les gens. Il y a beaucoup de gens âgés qui se racornissent et s’endurcissent ; moi, au contraire, je me tourne de plus en plus vers les autres. J’essaye d’apprendre et de m’améliorer, j’ai de moins en moins de certitudes… » nous confiait déjà il y a quelques années cet éternel jeune homme, doué de la capacité à sentir le bonheur qui passe. Ce bonheur devrait être complet pour le public et les musiciens fidèles, lors de cette session très spéciale de « Jazz sur le vif », où il joue successivement en trio avec Yves Torchinsky (contrebasse) et Eric Dervieu (batterie), en solo (en écho à l’un de ses grands disques : « Jazzman », véritable profession de foi parue en 1986), puis en quintette trans-générationnel avec en renforts Sylvain Gontard (trompette) et Pierrick Pedron (sax alto).
