Alors que se multiplient les seuls-en-scène, souvent pour des raisons économiques, le jeune Paul Platel aspire au théâtre épique, persuadé que sa génération de théâtre renouera avec cette forme. Ce jeune metteur en scène passé par l’EDT91 (l’École départementale de l’Essonne) y a puisé la majorité de la troupe d’acteurs qu’il dirige dans Je me souviens, une épopée donc, qu’il a écrite en s’inspirant d’abord d’Amarcord, le film de Fellini. S’il a fini par s’en éloigner, il en reste des « personnages dans leur pleine méchanceté et dans leur infinie générosité ». L’histoire est celle d’habitants d’un petit village du Sud-Est menacé de mort à cause de la fermeture de l’usine. Une fresque sociale qui a séduit Ariane Mnouchkine au point d’ouvrir au jeune auteur et metteur en scène les portes du Théâtre du Soleil pour les répétitions et une série de représentations. Quelle épopée !
