« Je pense à Yu se situe au cœur de la question qui me hante comme auteur : comment parler du monde sans faire abstraction de soi ? Comment parler de soi sans oublier le monde ? », écrit Carole Fréchette à propos de cette pièce où se croisent grande et petite histoires. Madeleine lit dans le journal un entrefilet à propos de la libération du journaliste chinois Yu Dongyue, qui après dix-sept ans passés en prison pour avoir jeté de la peinture rouge sur un portrait de Mao, a recouvré la liberté mais perdu la raison. Obnubilée par ce destin brisée, Madeleine s’enferme chez elle pour enquêter sur l’histoire de Yu et de ses camarades, également condamnés pour ce geste à la fois anodin et symboliquement très fort. Dans sa retraite, arrivent Jérémie, un homme qu’elle ne connaît pas, et Lin, une jeune immigrée chinoise à qui elle donne des leçons de français. Confiant les rôles de ces trois solitudes réunies autour de la mémoire des événements chinois de 1989 à Marianne Basler, Yilin Yang et Antoine Caubet, Jean-Claude Berutti met en scène la pièce de Fréchette comme un « théâtre abstrait, quasi symboliste ».
