Dans cette pièce en un acte de Pirandello, une femme et un homme dialoguent, en proie au doute et à un malaise diffus, expliqué en partie par une sorte d’attraction vers une autre présence, un autre homme. Ce dialogue intense « touche à nos fondements, aux endroits secrets où se fabriquent nos amours. » souligne le metteur en scène Vincent Lacoste, et les mots interviennent de façon d’autant plus prégnante que la première partie de la pièce est un rêve, tandis que la seconde bascule dans le réel. Une trame qui évoque celle d’Eyes Wide Shut de Stanley Kubrick, lorsque l’acuité des rêves transforme et détermine la perception du réel. « Nous sommes habités par des êtres absents » a dit Pirandello, et c’est justement cet entremêlement entre le rapport aux choses visibles et l’attirance vers « des zones plus mystérieuses qu’habitent nos fantômes », qui a intéressé la compagnie.
