Prudemment, et intelligemment, Laurent Gutmann n’a pas intitulé sa représentation Au-dessous du volcan, mais Je suis tombé. Comme si le metteur en scène et directeur du Centre dramatique de Thionville-Lorraine avait pleinement conscience de la quasi-impossibilité de restituer, sur un plateau de théâtre, l’entièreté du roman de l’écrivain britannique, l’immensité de cet écrit aux étendues abyssales. « On gloserait à l’infini à propos d’une œuvre aussi riche et profonde, écrit Maurice Nadeau dans son avant-propos à l’édition française*, et ce n’est certes pas le but de cette présentation. Elle voulait seulement prévenir le lecteur qui va s’enfoncer pour la première fois dans la forêt obscure que la place du moindre arbuste y a été marquée par un homme qui n’a rien voulu laisser au hasard… » S’il peut ainsi être ardu pour le lecteur de s’aventurer à travers la masse littéraire foisonnante d’Au-dessus du volcan, le spectateur de théâtre, lui, avance dans Je suis tombé le plus tranquillement du monde, de façon même assez plaisante, mais au final sans grand émoi, sans réel saisissement.
Le poids de l’alcool et des égarements humains
Une scénographie épurée et habile — qui joue sur de curieux effets de perspective visuelle, qui fait continuellement appel à l’imaginaire du public —, des comédiens qui façonnent quelques belles scènes d’authenticité, de dérision, de gravité… Tout cela ne suffit pas à créer le spectacle qui aurait pu exalter les nombreux inconditionnels de ce roman culte et donner aux autres l’envie de se plonger, toutes affaires cessantes, dans les quelque 600 pages qui le composent. Pourtant, Laurent Gutmann s’est posé les questions qu’exigeait un tel projet. Comment donner à sentir aux spectateurs l’ampleur et la profondeur de ces mondes intérieurs derrière l’apparente banalité des situations ? Comment, passant du roman à la scène, abandonner la littérature et offrir aux spectateurs une expérience qui ne lui fasse jamais regretter celle de la lecture ? Il faut bien admettre que ces interrogations n’ont que partiellement trouvé leur réponse. Visitant essentiellement les thématiques de l’éthylisme, des amours impossibles et des errances existentielles, Je suis tombé reste en dehors de l’exorbitante amplitude, de la folle démesure de l’œuvre originelle de Malcolm Lowry.
