Comment vous êtes-vous penché sur le poème de Coleridge ?
Jean-Baptiste Sastre : Il y a dix ans, je travaillais sur Artaud ; je lisais ses commentaires sur la poésie et les poètes. Artaud raconte une belle anecdote sur Coleridge en train d’écrire un poème. Le jeune Anglais découvre dans l’écriture le secret de la vie. Puis, un ami vient frapper à sa porte. Le poète se lève, va ouvrir et il oublie le poème. Coleridge réécrira pour retrouver ce bonheur échappé, mais il est mort à la poésie, définitivement.
Le poème est composé de sept chants.
J.-B. S. : Les sept chants correspondent à sept journées. Pour décor ou prétexte, se dessinent une noce et des invités de la noce. Un vieux marin passe par là et attrape un invité auquel il va raconter son voyage. Le mystère surgit aussi de la façon singulière de le dire, avec cette voix à la teneur singulière de Jean-Marie Patte.
Quel est ce voyage en mer que raconte le Vieux Marin ?
J.-B. S. : Il raconte son périple maritime au cours duquel un albatros tourne et tourne sans cesse dans le ciel au-dessus de l’équipage. Le marin finit par tuer l’albatros, et une malédiction s’abat dès lors sur le bateau. L’équipage entier se meurt tandis que le vieux marin reste vivant. Arrivent ensuite les séraphins et les serpents de mer, un paysage maritime d’une profondeur vertigineuse. Tuer l’oiseau de mer avec cruauté et au mépris de toutes les lois de l’hospitalité provoque des sanctions étranges sur l’équipage, à part le marin coupable qui revient dans sa patrie.
Pourquoi le choix de Jean-Marie Patte pour l’interprétation ?
J.-B. S. : Je souhaitais travailler avec Jean-Marie depuis longtemps : c’est un acteur d’une grâce et d’une élégance extrêmes, qui a l’art de dire la poésie. Il a été camarade de Roger Blin, de Maria Casarès et le Louis XIV de Rossellini.
Que voudriez-vous que le spectateur entende ?
J.-B. S. : La Ballade du Vieux Marin est un poème où rien n’est immédiat. Il faudrait pouvoir retenir un son peut-être, un rythme, une couleur, une douceur, une tendresse. C’est une matière dans laquelle nous sommes perdus, voilà d’où vient la beauté de l’énigme. Quand il parle des poètes anglais du dix-neuvième siècle, de Coleridge, mais aussi de Baudelaire, Artaud fait allusion au laudanum et à l’opium dont chacun usait et abusait. La poésie relève de l’envoûtement. Coleridge s’est ensuite tourné vers la philosophie plutôt que vers la poésie. Artaud le traite de lâche, comme s’il avait démissionné. Je voudrais que le spectateur perçoive cette écoute.
