Comment avez-vous eu l’idée de créer Jean la Chance de Brecht ?
Jean-Claude Fall : On a découvert la pièce dans les années 90 dans les archives du Berliner Ensemble, une révélation pour tout le monde. J’ai lu la pièce avec la troupe des Treize Vents : nous avons décidé de la monter. La lecture de la pièce a mis au jour un vrai bijou, comme un trésor que l’on aurait découvert dans le grenier de la maison, un tableau de maître. Brecht, jeune auteur inconnu, a écrit le fragment Jean la Chance dans une période de création intense, tandis qu’il reprend ses grandes pièces, Tambours dans la nuit ou Baal. C’est une pièce de jeunesse abandonnée dont on retrouve trace dans son Journal.

Quelle place occupe Jean la Chance dans l’œuvre de Brecht ?
J.-C. F. : Jean la Chance fonctionne comme un chaînon manquant dans la dramaturgie brechtienne, comme une façon d’approfondir la notion d’héroïsme en soulevant la morale de la bonté, et ses conséquences immédiates pour l’individu comme pour le groupe. Le discours sur le Bien et le Mal est mis à mal à l’intérieur de la plainte : « Nous qui voulions tellement construire un monde de bonté, nous sommes obligés d’être dur … » Le personnage de Baal est un ogre et un dévoreur. Quant à La Bonne Âme de Se-tchouan, c’est un texte emblématique où la bonté est obligée de s’inventer un cousin qui va empêcher la dilapidation de tous les biens. Brecht se penche sur cet axiome de morale pratique, cette obligation d’être brutal dans un monde de brutes. Jean la Chance correspond à la figure de celui qui n’est que bonté, incapable par naïveté ou par choix de ne pas voir ce qui est bon et beau chez l’autre même s’il trahit, ne retenant que la dimension positive.
Quel pourrait être le message de l’œuvre aujourd’hui ?
J.-C. F. : D’échange en échange, sa femme contre une ferme, Jean n’a plus rien et meurt près de la rivière. Jusqu’à la fin, il ne renonce pas à voir le beau. Cette posture s’inscrit loin de toutes les préoccupations actuelles puisque seul importe aujourd’hui le désir de posséder. Les jeunes perçoivent la pièce comme un message de résistance, un encouragement à la vie. Sur le mode du théâtre épique et du manège de foire, s’inscrivent poèmes et chant choral avec la musique de Stephen Warbeck. Un spectacle à la fois joyeux et noir avec la voix pour support.
