Fondé en 1966, la Grande Ecurie et la Chambre du Roy a été l’un des premiers ensembles sur instruments anciens. Vous considérez-vous comme un pionnier ?
Jean-Claude Malgoire : Dans les années 60, le mouvement était effectivement confidentiel. Il y avait Harnoncourt, Leonhardt… On peut voir en France des précurseurs à ce courant, comme d’Indy ou Saint-Saëns. Le répertoire baroque n’était pas forcément négligé, hormis le cas de la musique française. Ce qu’il y avait à trouver, c’était le style, en remettant en question les effectifs instrumentaux, les modes de jeux…
Parmi l’offre multiple d’ensembles baroques, quelle est aujourd’hui la marque de fabrique de La Grande Ecurie ?
J.-C. M. : Ce que je revendique, c’est une fidélité à mes musiciens. Certains jouent dans l’ensemble depuis trente ans. Comme dans les grandes équipes sportives, il y a une transmission. Cela crée une « manière », comme disait Monteverdi. Parmi les habitués de la maison, je citerais notre violon solo Philippe Couvert ou encore ma fille Florence Malgoire.
N’y a-t-il pas un risque de routinisation du mouvement baroqueux ?
J.-C. M. : Non, car la routinisation dépend du statut. Or les musiciens sont en freelance, ce qui maintient en permanence l’enthousiasme. On a toujours besoin de convaincre. Nous devons rester des saltimbanques.
Vous dirigez prochainement Orlando de Haendel. Quelle est votre vision de cet opéra ?
J.-C. M. : C’est un opéra magique, où tout est totalement invraisemblable. Chaque air est un monde à part. Il y a les airs de douleur, de victoire, de vengeance… Je me méfie par contre des ornementations délirantes dans les da capo des airs. Il ne faut pas faire de variations sans justification. C’est comme pour le continuo, où pour moi, le clavecin et une basse d’archet suffisent. On n’est plus chez Monteverdi, où l’instrumentarium est très large. Dans Haendel, ce serait de l’ordre du snobisme. Je préfère éviter la monotonie en faisant comprendre le texte dans les récits, trop souvent pris à toute allure.
Vous avez récemment dirigé au Théâtre des Champs-Elysées un opéra de Rossini. Comptez-vous aller plus loin historiquement sur les instruments anciens ?
J.C.M. : On peut aller partout ! Nous avons d’ailleurs fait L’Histoire du soldat de Stravinsky, où les sonorités des instruments du début du XXème siècle se révèlent très différentes des actuelles. L’organologie nous amène toujours vers des procédés d’interprétation différents. Il m’importe en outre de continuer à donner de la musique contemporaine. J’ai un très bon souvenir de Mare Nostrum de Kagel que nous avons récemment joué… dans la piscine de Roubaix.
