Théâtre et cinéma sont-ils liés quand Renoir se fait dramaturge ?
Jean-Claude Penchenat : Qu’il s’agisse de Nana ou bien de La Grande Illusion, Renoir a toujours mis en scène le théâtre dans son cinéma. Face à des difficultés chroniques de production, Renoir décide de s’orienter vers le théâtre dans les années 50. Il met en scène Jules César dans les arènes d’Arles. Il écrit Orvet en 55, joué par Paul Meurisse et Leslie Caron, un spectacle attaqué par la presse dramatique, et vénéré par les Cahiers du Cinéma. Renoir a entretenu dès l’enfance, ne serait-ce qu’avec le Guignol du Luxembourg, des liens avec le théâtre. Quant à l’acteur Pierre Renoir, son frère, il était le bras droit de Louis Jouvet que Jean aurait bien voulu mettre en scène dans La Folle de Chaillot. Les dialogues de Carola ressemblent à des dialogues de films, à une époque où l’on n’avait pas peur de la théâtralité.
Comment l’écriture de Carola s’est-elle imposée au cinéaste ?
J.–C. P. : Renoir a eu envie d’écrire cette pièce pour l’actrice Ingrid Bergman qu’il était allé voir dans Hedda Gabler. Il l’avait trouvée abattue ; elle venait de se faire « plaquer » par Rossellini. Renoir lui promit une pièce. L’actrice Carola est aussi menée par les hommes qui veulent qu’elle ressemble à tout ce qu’ils ont projeté sur elle, comme l’icône suédoise.

Ainsi, face à Carola, le général allemand, ou bien le jeune résistant, traqué par la Gestapo, qui se réfugie dans sa loge pour avoir un autographe, ou bien le directeur d’un théâtre collaborateur qui veut en faire une Sarah Bernhardt. Finalement, elle n’a plus d’identité et pour qu’elle se reconstruise, il faudra que deux hommes soient tués et que le dernier déserte. La période de l’Occupation m’a toujours inspiré, à côté de la problématique de l’acteur et du pouvoir, de la compromission et du refus.

J.-C. P. : La pièce de Dominique Rolland traite du métissage. Nous en proposons une sorte de work in progress afin de rendre publiques les séances de travail autour du matériau de la mise en scène, ses répétitions et son spectacle. Dans un même esprit, les compagnies invitées à l’initiative d’Un automne à tisser apprennent à gérer un lieu de théâtre dans le frottement concret avec son fonctionnement ordinaire. La question posée aujourd’hui est plus que jamais celle des responsabilités artistiques et professionnelles.
