L’improvisation semble être devenue l’activité musicale la plus épanouissante pour ce musicien généreux et complet (il est aussi un remarquable compositeur) devenu star du petit écran. Seul face à son piano, il aime convoquer les grands compositeurs pour se jouer de leur musique, la servir et s’en servir pour vagabonder en toute liberté. Son prochain programme se consacre à Felix Mendelssohn, qui fut lui aussi, en son temps, un musicien engagé pour faire connaître et aimer la musique des autres, particulièrement celle de Bach. Et lui aussi un grand improvisateur, à l’orgue en particulier… « Je chiperai à Mendelssohn ses meilleurs thèmes pour célébrer le printemps retrouvé » promet Zygel. « Pour moi, Mendelssohn, c’est le Prince des romantiques, élégant, lumineux, visionnaire. Aussi bon à l’alto qu’au piano, à l’orgue qu’à la direction d’orchestre, en peinture qu’en natation, en escrime ou en philosophie. Grand improvisateur aussi, mais très énervé quand le public lui demandait d’improviser sur une chanson ou un air à la mode ! Il finira par décider qu’il n’improviserait plus au piano, mais uniquement à l’orgue, libre à la tribune de choisir ses thèmes, de préférence des chorals luthériens. » rappelle-t-il.
