Révélé au sein de l’Ensemble Intercontemporain où il est repéré (puis fortement soutenu) par Pierre Boulez, Queyras a depuis ces débuts construit l’une des plus exemplaires trajectoires de soliste français au niveau international. Ses enregistrements reçoivent régulièrement les éloges enthousiastes de la presse européenne et américaine, à l’image du CD « Arpeggione » avec le pianiste Alexandre Tharaud, de ses concertos pour violoncelle de Haydn sur instruments d’époque avec le Freiburger Barockorchester ou encore de ses Suites pour violoncelle seul de Britten. Très engagé dans la musique de notre temps, il joue et crée des œuvres de Fedele, Amy, Mantovani, Kurtag et Schoeller. Lors de ce concert immanquable au Théâtre des Bouffes du Nord, Jean-Guihen Queyras fait entrer en résonance dix siècles de musique méditerranéenne en compagnie de Keyvan et Bijan Chemirani, spécialistes du zarb (tambour), et Socratis Sinopoulos (vièle « kemence » et violon « laouto »). Au programme : Ay, there is the rub… pour violoncelle solo de Marco Stroppa, la Sequenza XIV pour violoncelle solo de Luciano Berio et des improvisations autour des Musiques traditionnelles turque, grecque et iranienne. À signaler, une semaine plus tard, dans la même salle, le dialogue de l’altiste Kim Kashkashian et du pianiste Robert Levin dans Bach, Britten, Brahms et des chants espagnols (Carlos Guastavino, Ginastera, Granados, etc..).
