Elle, c’est Jean Harlowe, l’une des plus célèbres stars hollywoodiennes des années 20. Pas vraiment jolie, dit-on, mais piquante et vive. La partenaire à l’écran de Clark Gable fut une diva pulpeuse à scandales, et à l’occasion, la maîtresse de malfrats et de gangsters. À ce mythe féminin dévastateur, la pièce de Michaël Mac Clure The Beard (1965), adaptée en français par Roland Dubillard (1973), oppose Billy the Kid, une figure de bandit de grand chemin et de meurtrier dans l’Ouest américain. L’auteur, le « beat poet », trouve son compte dans cette mise en lumière de l’absurdité de la vie et de la langue. L’écriture est rudimentaire et peu romantique, privilégiant avec art pourtant les répétitions cycliques des répliques, les jeux de mots et les sonorités propres à un univers déstructuré et déshumanisé. Devant un large écran, où défilent les vues d’une Amérique blafarde aux paysages inquiétants, s’installe donc ce couple ravageur.
Un jeu de chat et de souris cruel et sans pitié, vulgaire et ignoble
Jean et Billy sont sans pudeur, aptes à un langage cru dont les variations tournent autour de l’approche sexuelle et de la proie à séduire. Chacun des deux veut être le conquérant et non le ou la conquis(e). De l’un à l’autre, la parole passe : « Viens ici t’asseoir sur mes genoux et je te laisserais toucher mes bottes … » Qui aura le dernier mot ? La guitare ardente de Thibault Abrial diffuse le grain blues de ses plaintes sauvages, de ses pleurs et de ses râles, comme Ray Manzarek, le clavier des Doors, le fit avec Mac Clure. Un jeu de chat et de souris cruel et sans pitié, vulgaire et ignoble, mais tellement juste dans le verbe haut, l’hyperbole du geste et de l’attitude. Talon aiguille et petite culotte pour la dame au glamour provocant et caustique (Maya Mercer), visage émacié et halé pour le mâle colérique qui sait jouer des armes à feu quand il le faut (Jean-Pierre Germain). Une rudesse posée en ultimatum.
