Voilà près de 10 ans que Jean la Chance a été retrouvée dans les archives du Berliner Ensemble. Inspirée d’un conte des frères Grimm, cette pièce inachevée de Bertolt Brecht a été écrite en 1919, alors que l’auteur était âgé de 21 ans. Elle retrace les mésaventures d’un paysan crédule et enthousiaste, un homme candide qui, cerné par des individus cupides et malhonnêtes, se laisse dépouiller de tous ses biens. « Jean la Chance a tout perdu sauf la joie, analyse Elisabeth Hölzle. [Sa] clarté, son émerveillement, font de lui un être à la charnière de l’idiot et du poète. » Souhaitant orienter sa représentation vers l’univers des marionnettes, la metteure en scène a conçu un espace scénique surélevé au sein duquel les personnages peuvent apparaître et disparaître de façon verticale. Cette configuration, qui « laisse une place importante aux mots et aux corps », renforce l’idée « d’une aire de jeu d’où surgissent des créatures étranges et irréelles », des « êtres qui, comme des pions, seraient l’objet d’une expérience ».
