Pourquoi avoir choisi de concevoir un spectacle sur la vie de couple ?
Jean-Louis Benoit : Pour rendre justice à un écrivain oublié qui, en son temps, fut considéré comme l’un des plus grands. Mais Courteline est sans profondeur. C’est l’Université qui le dit, l’évacuant de ses livres et programmes. Et si c’était justement cela, la force et la beauté de Courteline : son absence de profondeur ? Sa simplicité, sa banalité, ses situations dramatiques sans véritable charpente ? Les trois tranches de vie que je mets en scène se sont imposées à moi par leur cohérence : trois couples, trois guerres (la dernière est un massacre). Courteline y montre ce qu’il n’a cessé d’observer : l’absence d’amour. Dans ce monde-là, on ne s’aime pas, la vie de couple est un leurre. Courteline est un misanthrope, un pessimiste, un dégoûté.
Quels sont les fondements du comique chez Courteline ?
J.-L. B. : Ce théâtre se situe à l’opposé du vaudeville. Courteline ne s’appuie pas sur des procédés, mais sur des personnages admirablement dessinés, sur une seule situation dramatique, sur des dialogues de génie, sur une langue de toute beauté. Pour comprendre – aimer – Courteline, il faut se retourner vers la farce du Moyen-Age, vers le Molière de Scapin. Comme tout créateur, l’artiste Courteline témoigne du monde. Pas à la façon de Beckett ni de Sénèque, mais à celle des grands comiques. L’enjeu essentiel de ce théâtre, c’est le rire.
