Ces deux pièces sont-elles nées à partir des versions pupitres, qui constituent une marque de fabrique de votre compagnie ?
Jean-Luc Paliès : Oui. Nous avons commencé ces versions pupitres dès le début de la compagnie en 1985. En fonctionnant comme un groupe orchestral, avec quelques directions de sens, on peut raconter une pièce et laisser travailler l’imaginaire du spectateur. Depuis huit ans, nous sommes présents une fois par mois lors des mardis midi au théâtre du Rond-Point. C’est dans ce cadre que j’ai découvert Alain Didier-Weill, avec Jimmy puis Vienne 1913 et Matéï Visniec, avec son avant-dernier texte, qui fait écho au Sexe de la femme comme champ de bataille (1998), pièce montée par Guy Rétoré.
Vienne 1913 a gardé cet aspect choral dans la mise en scène…
J.-L. P. : La pièce complexe et charpentée compte vingt-cinq personnages. On s’est vite mis d’accord pour imaginer qu’elle puisse être jouée par un orchestre dans le jardin du Prater et à partir de cette idée du chœur construire l’imaginaire de la pièce, chaque personnage – Adolf Hitler, Freud, Jung, Hugo – sortant de l’orchestre. Neuf comédiens plus trois musiciens incarnent tous les personnages, dont une narratrice, porteuse des didascalies. La scénographie se fonde sur un dispositif musical, avec l’idée de l’instrumentarium de verre. On espère poursuivre notre tournée jusqu’en 2013 !
Comment le psychanalyste Alain Didier-Weill caractérise-t-il Hitler ?
J.-L. P. : Il ne met pas Adolf sur le divan, on ne peut pas psychanalyser un tyran de cette nature, ce serait ridicule. Par contre, pour comprendre le processus de transformation d’un être, de fabrication d’un antisémitisme aussi effarant, il a inventé le personnage de Hugo, jeune aristocrate qui va devenir l’ami d’Adolf, et qui vient justement suivre une psychanalyse chez Freud parce qu’il est antisémite. L’auteur se rapproche d’Hannah Arendt dans ses questionnements sur le mal. Adolf est le produit d’un nœud de l’histoire et d’une évolution individuelle. Notre époque est inquiétante, il faut rester vigilant. Défions-nous de l’Histoire, mais défions-nous surtout de nous-mêmes et de notre pouvoir de destruction.
La pièce de Matéï Visniec évoque aussi la guerre et l’Europe…
J.-L. P. : Avec comme toile de fond les guerres fratricides des pays des Balkans. Un couple revient au pays, retrouve sa maison brûlée, et tente de retrouver le corps du fils disparu. Le père creuse partout et pendant ce temps le fantôme du fils est présent. La fille se prostitue à Paris. Cette pièce comique et grotesque, métaphorique et sensible, fait rire et pleurer en même temps. La musique est très présente. La pièce passe d’un lieu et d’un univers à l’autre. Au théâtre le metteur en scène crée une mise en jeu de l’écoute, et le spectateur, guidé dans la simultanéité des actions, élabore son cheminement dans la pièce. Et je dis toujours aux comédiens : « Méfiez-vous des spectateurs, ils sont très intelligents et très rapides ! ».
