SUNSET-SUNSIDE / JAZZ
« J’ai rencontré Nicolas Bruant il y a quelques années déjà. Depuis, ses photos africaines habitent mon espace de travail et la force brute qui s’en dégage m’a simplement poussé un jour à en imaginer la musique et à l’écrire. Cette période de ma vie coïncide avec des recherches sur les animaux totems dans les chamanismes indigènes et avec le sentiment d’un impérieux besoin de revenir à la source.
A l’écoute du monde sauvage
Je me perds dans la nature et cherche à retrouver le sens profond de « l’écoute » : observer, en silence, pour éprouver la beauté et la puissance des choses. Ma musique vient de là. Je ne suis jamais allé en Afrique, mais les photos de Bruant ont constitué un téléobjectif. Elles m’ont emmené au plus près du sauvage dans son élément, sans intrusion. Pour capter son essence. C’est ce souffle fauve qui traverse ces compositions… et mes clarinettes ! Car je ne veux pas oublier que mon instrument fut d’abord là-bas, quelque part, au Mozambique, la branche d’un bel arbre vivant et j’aime à penser que souffler dans une clarinette c’est se connecter à une mémoire en donnant une seconde vie à ce bout de bois qui a tes tas d’histoires à raconter. En filigrane ce répertoire rend hommage à d’autres racines africaines, celles du jazz, bien entendu ».
