Que représente cette expérience dans votre exceptionnel parcours musical’
David Liebman : Tout d’abord, Jean-Marie est un magnifique pianiste et un compositeur de premier ordre. Chacune de ses compositions capture une ambiance et porte en elle un message profond. C’est pour moi un grand plaisir de les jouer avec lui. Enregistrer ce programme, dont le coeur est effectivement le fado portugais, a représenté pour moi un challenge passionnant. J’ai cherché, avec mon propre style à habiter cette musique.
Pourquoi avoir pensé à lui pour ce projet très particulier, autour de la mélodie et du fado ?
J.-M. M. : Dave voulait jouer ma musique, il est très ouvert et curieux des démarches artistiques. J’ai choisi des thèmes issus de différents répertoires personnels. Je lui ai aussi proposé de jouer quelques Fados. Il a été très heureux de découvrir mes mélodies et ces chansons traditionnelles du Portugal. J’aime sa route musicale, placée sous le signe de la modernité et du lyrisme. Souvent ces pôles ont été éloignés alors qu’il est, à mon sens, très enthousiasmant de les réunir. Dave est le musicien le plus incroyable pour cette idée.

On a, à l’écoute de l’album, une impression de "jamais entendu"… Vous avez rarement joué aussi près de la mélodie, dans un climat très touchant de dénuement et de fragilité…
D . L. : Il y a une chaleur et un lyrisme inhérents à ces mélodies qui, bien-sûr ont souligné cet aspect de ma personnalité, particulièrement au sax soprano.
