Une mère et sa fille vivent sous le même toit. La première se désole de voir l’autre dormir tout le jour, ne rien faire, sauf errer la nuit. Deux hommes passent de temps en temps, le fils ainsi que l’amant de la mère. On le soupçonne d’avoir agressé la jeune fille. Mais l’écriture de Jon Fosse est pleine de trous, de silences. De doutes. « Nous scrutons à la loupe quatre solitudes qui ne peuvent s’accorder, qui se cherchent, se reniflent comme des bêtes meurtries ». Entre la cuisine aseptisée de la mère, la chambre refuge de la fille et le salon, lieu des affrontements, une atmosphère délétère aux relents d’alcool règne dans cette maison aux espaces cloisonnés et translucides à la fois. Y résonne d’autant mieux la langue de Fosse, « dépouillée de ses artifices, extérieurement froide, mais en implosion permanente (…) qui laisse entendre un ailleurs autour des mots ».
