Comment la Lettre au père s’est-elle imposée à vous ?
Jean-Quentin Châtelain : Le projet est né avec Jean-Yves Ruf qui m’a contacté. C’est une production du Théâtre Vidy-Lausanne de René Gonzales, un compagnon de route avec lequel j’ai travaillé au Théâtre Gérard Philipe de Saint-Denis, dès ma sortie de l’École du TNS. Je connais bien la Lettre au père, j’en suis éloigné aussi car j’ai vécu une enfance heureuse. J’ai eu un père fantastique que j’aimais et dont j’ai beaucoup appris. Le texte de Kafka m’inquiète par son étrangeté, et j’ai envie de le jouer comme un Avertissement aux pères. Un « Faites attention ! » adressé aux pères, en général.

Qu’est-ce qui a motivé l’écriture de cette lettre ?
J.-Q. C. : La domination du père est infernale ; le fils trouve un refuge, face à cette contrainte, dans l’art, la création littéraire et le repli. Quel qu’ait été le père, Kafka se sent fragile et il écrit. Le texte reste positif car l’expérience est bienfaisante. La Lettrecommence ainsi : « Tu m’as demandé récemment pourquoi je prétends avoir peur de toi. Comme d’habitude, je n’ai rien su te répondre. » La Lettre répond à ce reproche. Et le texte est surtout né de l’impossibilité d’assumer une union matrimoniale avec des enfants. Au moment de l’écriture de la lettre, le fils projetait de se marier avec Julie Wohryzeck, à l’âge de trente-six ans, une union qui n’aura pas lieu. Pour moi, ce texte est une suite à Kaddish pour l’enfant qui ne naîtra pas d’Imre Kertész. Deux écrivains juifs de l’Est évoquent l’impossibilité de procréer, pour des raisons différentes.
À chaque fois qu’il veut se marier, Kafka bute et renonce.
J.-Q. C. : Le chétif Kafka se dit incapable de s’occuper d’une famille alors qu’il est fort. Ce n’est pas le mariage qui le rebute, mais ses conséquences. Toutes les lettres écrites à Félice, Milena, contiennent des passages sur cette incapacité à s’unir matrimonialement. Kafka admire ce père, un homme puissant régnant sur sa famille et sur son commerce, irréprochable, exemplaire en apparence, car le père sous-entend : « Faites ce que je dis et ne faites pas ce que je fais. » À table, il prônait le silence, et une tenue stricte, tandis qu’il mangeait mal et bavardait. Je suis père également et en tant que père, je me sentirais plus proche de la culpabilité qu’entraîne la paternité vis-à-vis des enfants. Moi-même, je m’impose en exemple, par la parole et non par mes actes : je parle beaucoup, je me tiens mal, etc… Et physiquement, je m’identifie au père autoritaire et massif comme le père kafkaïen ! Mais ceci n’est que formel : je suis et reste le fils du côté du coeur, intérieurement. La Lettre au père est un réquisitoire, une plaidoirie où le plaideur est l’avocat de la défense et l’accusé aussi.
Quel est ce plaisir d’interpréter les grands textes ?
J.-C. Q. : J’ai la chance de travailler des auteurs comme Zorn, Kertész, Pessoa… Ces œuvres me transforment en m’enseignant une philosophie de la vie. J’aime la Lettre au père car je l’apprends dans sa signification profonde : « par mon propre cœur ». Je commence à me connaître moi-même, je pratique la philosophie en me nourrissant des grands textes.
