Qu’est-ce qui, dans La Fleur à la bouche et Cédrats de Sicile, vous a semblé justifier la mise en regard de ces deux pièces ?
Jean-Yves Lazennec : Sans doute leurs correspondances. Toutes deux sont des pièces nocturnes, qui parlent de passages, de prises de conscience, qui se situent entre deux mondes. Cela à travers des histoires totalement différentes : un voyageur qui est amené à faire face à l’effroi, au vertige d’une mort imminente, à la réalité très concrète de la condition humaine ; un homme qui s’aperçoit que la femme qu’il a aimée dans le passé n’est plus celle qu’il a connue…
Ces deux pièces interrogent donc la représentation que l’homme se fait du monde…
J-Y. L. : La représentation qu’il se fait du monde, mais aussi la représentation qu’il se fait de lui-même. Comment rester fidèle à des apparences totalement vaines ? Comment rester tout simplement fidèle à soi-même ? Ces questionnements sont au centre de l’œuvre de Pirandello. Dans Cédrats de Sicile, Sina Marnis est effectivement devenue une autre femme, mais d’une certaine façon elle est également restée la même. On assiste, comme souvent chez l’auteur italien, à une dissociation, une véritable diffraction du moi. D’ailleurs, si ces deux pièces s’éclairent l’une l’autre, c’est probablement à travers cette impossibilité fondamentale à croire que quoi que ce soit puisse jamais se révéler définitif, cette incapacité à être toujours et totalement raccord avec soi-même.

Comment expliquez-vous que ces deux pièces restent en marge des grands classiques de Pirandello ?
J-Y. L. : Peut-être parce que, contrairement aux pièces plus connues, Pirandello n’est pas ici un auteur raisonneur, philosophe, il crée des textes empruntant à la forme de la fable, des textes qui se situent beaucoup plus à l’intérieur de l’émotion, du sensible, que ses grands classiques. La Fleur à la bouche et Cédrats de Sicile forment vraiment un théâtre pour rire et pour pleurer, un théâtre à la fois très drôle et très sombre. Les personnages de ces pièces sortent totalement morcelés de la représentation dont ils sont la matière.
Comme s’ils avaient été soumis à une forme de séisme intérieur ?
J-Y. L. : Exactement, tous ces personnages subissent une forme d’implosion à laquelle ils survivent, mais qui les aura, à l’intérieur, complètement broyés. Car ce qu’ils vivent, ressentent et expérimentent est brûlant : il n’y a pas de rédemption possible. Pour cela, Pirandello n’use d’aucun ressort psychologique. L’intranquillité nocturne qu’il met en place se propage comme par capillarité. Et pourtant, on rigole. J’aurais envie de dire qu’il y a quelque chose de Kundera dans ces deux pièces, une forme d’insoutenable légèreté de l’être.
