Né en 1943, Jeffrey Tate se voue d’abord à de longues années d’études de médecine avant de se convertir définitivement et entièrement à la musique. Dans ses premières années, il est l’assistant, au Covent Garden de Londres, de chefs aussi prestigieux que Georg Solti, Colin Davis, Rudolf Kempe, Carlos Kleiber ou John Pritchard, puis plus tard de Pierre Boulez à Bayreuth pour la Tétralogie (1976-1980) ou de Karajan à Salzbourg. Bien connu du public parisien – il occupa le poste de premier chef invité de l’Orchestre National de France de 1989 à 1998 -, il revient pour un concert exceptionnel dédié au répertoire anglais, dont il est un spécialiste, à l’invitation de l’Orchestre de Paris. Son programme alterne valeurs sûres avec A time there was de Britten, suite de folks songs absolutely British pleines de nostalgie, ou encore les célèbres Enigma Variations de Elgar, et le carrément rare avec The triumph of Neptune de Lord Berners (1883-1950). Oublié aujourd’hui, il fut admiré en son temps par Stravinski en personne qui le désignait comme le compositeur anglais le plus intéressant de sa génération.
