Au Centre de musique baroque de Versailles, vous dirigez deux œuvres d’Henri-Joseph Rigel. Qu’est-ce qui vous a séduit dans la musique de ce compositeur aujourd’hui oublié ?
Jérémie Rhorer : Quand nous avons défini l’identité du Cercle de l’harmonie, à savoir celle d’un orchestre classique, il nous a paru tout de suite essentiel d’exhumer un répertoire méconnu et de pérenniser ainsi la démarche des pionniers. Il y a un esprit très particulier dans la musique de Rigel. Ce compositeur écrit dans un style galant, mais avec une espièglerie proche de Haydn. La Sortie d’Egypte que nous jouerons à Versailles est un très bel exemple de figuralisme musical, avec notamment la scène de l’ouverture de la mer ou encore le double chœur opposant, à la fin de l’œuvre, les Hébreux et les Egyptiens. Interpréter ce type de partition permet d’éclairer d’un nouveau jour la musique de Mozart, dont nous donnerons la Symphonie n°31 « Paris ». On aurait tort de penser que l’œuvre de Mozart est née ex nihilo.
A côté de la direction du Cercle de l’harmonie, comment organisez-vous votre carrière de chef d’orchestre invité ?
J.R. : Je tiens à diriger un autre répertoire avec les orchestres qui m’invitent. Selon moi, il y a une exigence chez Mozart, notamment au niveau du style, qui nécessite un temps de travail plus important que ne peuvent l’offrir les orchestres modernes. Je vais ainsi diriger la Symphonie n°1 « Rêves d’hiver » de Tchaïkovski à l’Orchestre de Bordeaux ou encore un programme Schumann-Mahler avec la Staatskapelle de Dresde.
Qu’en est-il de votre autre domaine d’activité : la composition ?
J.R. : J’ai traversé une période de crise, car je n’arrivais pas à trouver le temps pour composer. Désormais, je vais organiser mon calendrier de chef en m’octroyant des mois entiers pour écrire. En décembre va être créé mon concerto pour violoncelle avec Jérôme Pernoo. Et je travaille déjà à une commande d’opéra, mais il est un peu tôt pour en parler !
