Votre travail illustre la qualité de la scène jazz lilloise. Avez-vous le sentiment d’appartenir à une famille "nordiste" de musiciens’
Jérémie Ternoy : Sans parler de famille, il y a une unité « géographique » et une volonté de pas mal de musiciens de faire de la musique là où ils sont, d’où la création dans la région de différents collectifs : Zone libre, dont je fais partie, ainsi que Circum ou Onde Parallèles. Le fait de s’autogérer et de créer ses propres moyens de diffusion et de production n’est pas typiquement lillois mais existe fortement ici. Cela génère une grande liberté de création. Reste les difficultés à faire vivre ensuite les projets, à les exporter et les faire tourner.
Vous signez votre deuxième album à la tête de votre trio, qui existe depuis 8 ans déjà. C’est un travail profond, patient, ambitieux et passionné. On sent que vous vous inscrivez dans le long terme…
Jérémie Ternoy : Ce trio est effectivement mon principal projet même si je participe d’autres aventures qui me passionnent aussi… Disons que c’est le seul que j’essaye d’envisager sous tous les aspects, de la création à la diffusion. Je ne peux effectivement pas envisager ce travail autrement que sur le long terme. Musicalement, j’ai besoin de temps, pour travailler, pour écrire et pour réfléchir à ce que je fais. J’équilibre ce travail sur la durée avec une approche dans l’urgence, cela s’entend, je crois.

Votre attachement à la formule du trio est très forte. Le célèbre album « Now he sings, now he sobs » de Chick Corea, enregistré en 1968, est pour vous un projet fondateur dont vous vous sentez tous très proches dans le groupe…
Jérémie Ternoy : La formule du trio est effectivement très riche. C’est pour moi une formule complexe mais passionnante. L’histoire du jazz en est remplie, tous plus intéressants les un que les autres. « Now he sings, now he sobs » est un bel exemple de la rapidité de circulation des idées entre les musiciens et de la cohérence d’un répertoire. La « responsabilité » est égale entre nous trois. Même si j’écris le répertoire, Nicolas et Charles sont obligés de s’en emparer pour qu’on ait une chance que cela sonne pleinement. Il existe une grande confiance entre nous trois. Ce sont des musiciens que j’aime écouter, c’est fondamental pour jouer ensemble.
