C’est pour l’école-atelier Rudra que Maurice Béjart a créé Tchekhov au bois dormant, en s’inspirant d’un texte de Tchekhov : Le Génie de la forêt (1889), d’une actualité vibrante. "Qu’on abatte les arbres quand c’est nécessaire, mais qu’on cesse d’anéantir les forêts. Toutes les forêts russes gémissent sous les coups de hache, des millions d’arbres sont perdus, les bêtes et les oiseaux quittent leurs refuges, les rivières baissent"… En première partie de cet acte chorégraphique militant, les jeunes danseurs présentent un travail collectif : créer des espaces pour travailler ensemble constitue aussi un message politique. Comme le rappelle Béjart, "Rudra est aussi un mode de vie intellectuel et moral. Une façon d’exister par rapport au monde moderne où le danseur prend une place sociale dans l’univers. A une époque de relâchement et de permissivité, il est important d’avoir des êtres humains qui, sans être agressifs, ont une réelle volonté d’affronter le combat de la vie".
