C’est à un Debussy moins connu que celui de La Mer, des Préludes ou de Pelléas que s’intéresse l’ensemble Cairn pour ce concert. La cantate L’Enfant prodigue qui valut au compositeur le Prix de Rome en 1884, est clairement une œuvre de jeunesse, teintée même de l’académisme nécessaire à concourir pour le prix qu’il reçut. Mais, par sa fluidité, déjà présente dans les chœurs préparatoires que sont Salut, printemps et Printemps, elle ouvre déjà l’horizon aux futurs chefs-d’œuvre. Avec son Alcyone d’après Ovide (1902), Ravel ne parvint pas, quant à lui, à remporter le prix de Rome. L’œuvre, ambitieuse, est pourtant de belle facture, même si l’on n’y devine pas encore le génie de l’orchestration que sera par la suite le compositeur.
